App of the Whatever: WinRoll
Monday, May 19. 2008
Yet another App of the Whatever posting with another application for Microsoft Windows. Somehow the great standard features of a KDE desktop are not worth mentioning as long as you are using KDE. But as soon as I have to live without them on Microsoft Windows I am always very happy to find a program that brings just a little piece of KDE back to Windows.
This time it's about window shading.
I always found the default behavior in MS windows useless: Double clicking the title bar maximizes the window. This is a task that is not very often done. But what I constantly need to do is to find other hidden windows. So there must be a quick way to show what's hidden behind. With KDE I use window shading for this: The window is minimized to its title bar as seen in the right screenshot above. But the window is still on the desktop and not vanished by iconifing it to the taskbar, where it must be searched again afterwards.
This is were WinRoll helps. By right clicking on the titlebar of a window the window is shaded or rolled up. Unfortunately it does not allow to override the double click behaviour.
WinRoll also allows you to make a window translucent to view what's behind and many more window behaviours using the Shift key along with a mouse button.
